Who can get an additional free credit report with no hidden cost?

Free credit reports from credit reporting agencies are available depending on your situation and the state in which you live. It may take 2 to 3 weeks to get your free copy.

Credit bureaus are bound by the Fair Credit Reporting Act to provide you with a free credit report if you meet these specific requirements:

  • You have been denied credit, insurance, or employment within the past sixty (60) days as a result of your credit report. (It is the responsibility of the company that denied you credit or employment to indicate which credit reporting company was used, and the phone number and address for getting the free report. Free reports may not available over the Internet.)

  • You can certify in writing that you:
    • are unemployed and intend to apply for employment in the 60-day period beginning on the date in which you made the certification
    • are a recipient of public welfare assistance, or
    • have reason to believe that your file at the agency contains inaccurate information due to fraud.

  • Residents of the states listed below are entitled to one free copy of your credit report each year from the each of the credit bureaus.

    • Colorado
    • Georgia*
    • Massachusetts
    • New Jersey
    • Vermont

    * Georgia residents are entitled to two free credit reports per calendar year.

When you call for a free report, be sure to have the following information about yourself ready...

  • First, middle and last name (including Jr., Sr., III)
  • Current address
  • Previous addresses in the past two years, if any
  • Social Security Number
  • Date of birth
  • Current employer
